Cheshire Medical Center Converts to Natural Gas

Cheshire Medical Center/Dartmouth-Hitchcock Keene Converts Its Heat Source from Fuel Oil to Cleaner, Less Expensive Natural Gas

Cheshire Medical Center/Dartmouth-Hitchcock is changing its heat source from fuel oil to compressed natural gas (CNG). The conversion means that the hospital will emit 26% less CO2, much less SO2 and NOx, and almost no particulates creating a cleaner environment for its patients, employees and neighbors.

The hospital is not located on a gas pipeline so did not have the option of converting to gas until now. NG Advantage LLC offers a new service of trucking gas in high–tech carbon fiber trailers to very large energy users not located on a pipeline such as the New Hampshire companies - APC Paper and the Cheshire Medical Center.

NG Advantage will supply gas from its Pembroke, NH Compressor Station to the Medical Center 24 hours a day using its “virtual pipeline” of a fleet of tractor/trailers.

NG Advantage’s customers save 20-40% off of last year’s cost of fuel oil. The conversion to burning CNG helps the hospital control the cost of its patient care without compromising on the quality of service.

Cheshire Medical Center/Dartmouth-Hitchcock Keene is a nonprofit community hospital and clinic with a mission to lead its community to become the nation's healthiest through its clinical and service excellence, collaboration, and compassion for every patient, every time. To accomplish the goal, the Medical Center established Healthy Monadnock 2020, which is a community-wide health initiative designed to actively engage the citizens of Cheshire County in the process of becoming the nation's healthiest community by 2020.

Part of improving the health of the Keene area is to be actively involved in improving the air quality around the facility. Converting from burning fuel oil to burning natural gas is a large step in improving air quality. Burning CNG lowers the Medical Center’s carbon footprint, eliminates particulates and lowers both NOx and SO2 emissions.

Another part of the Medical Center’s vision is to provide integrated healthcare services in an “efficient and effective manner.” In order to do that, the Center has to keep its overhead costs as low as possible. Natural gas saves about 30% on the cost of heat.

CMC/DHK’s Vice President of Clinical & Support Services, Paul Pezone expressed his support of the conversion to CNG saying, “Our Facilities Team performed a strategic review of the latest technologies, focusing on options that maintain quality and align best with our infrastructure needs. Partnering with NG Advantage gives us the opportunity to reach our energy savings goals, lessen our carbon footprint, and maintain our high quality of service to our patients, staff and community.”

Tom Evslin, CEO of NG Advantage, commented on the Medical Center’s change to natural gas saying, “We’re pleased to be able to deliver the economic and environmental benefits of natural gas to Cheshire Medical Center, its patients, and its neighbors. Saving money on energy helps reduce medical costs without any compromise to care. Moreover, reduced emissions are good for everybody’s health and natural gas is much cleaner and greener than the oil which it replaces. We now have four hospitals in our customer list and have developed expertise in meeting their precise needs just as we have for paper makers, asphalt plants, and the dairy industry.”
